Large Antique Staffordshire Handled Mug, c1840s

Done in a sentimental motif with urns, flowers, palms and a river with boats, this Italianate scene is distinctive of early Staffordshire transfer patterns. What is especially nice about this handsome mug is its large size. It's got great impact with a diameter of just over 4" and height of just under 4". Counting the handle, it is a good 6" wide. A border of flowers, scrolls and boteh shapes surrounds the interior rim and is also on the handle. In very nice condition with anticipated show of age and normal use in some darkening of the background color and excellent crackle. Signed on the bottom with a blue inked 20. Actual color not as bright as our picture. The background is cream; the transfer is dark browns. Like more pictures? Just ask.

Horse Form Food Chopper, 19thC

There is so much to say about this food chopper, I don't know where to begin. It is all original and although it's been used, it has also been well taken care of. Displays beautifully and it works, too. Figural choppers are highly desirable and this one is outstanding. North American. Has a good wood handle with the best patina we've seen in awhile. Looks like hand cut nails were used. Well detailed horse figural and a sharp edge to the cutter. A secure wonderful early piece, and an exciting find. We love it! 9 3/4" long from one end to the other; 3" wide at its widest point. We'll be happy to send you pictures and to answer any questions.

Homemade Homespun Hussif, VanDycked Pin Leaves, c1895

In rich cadet blue and cream homespun, mainly hand-stitched with some treadle stitching, a very sweet, folky housewife roll-up or hussif. Dating to the late 19th century, it has felted wool VanDyked pin and needle pages. These were not pinked with pinking shears, but intentionally cut into little VanDyke points for decorative effect...a very dear touch. Two small patch pockets and three large patch pockets. The hussif rolls up and ties up with its original twill tape. The only age and use marks we can find are some scattered stains on the exterior. The hussif was used as intended, obviously, and the wear patterns prove it. Just as we like our antiques, showing their use! Very Americana, very homey. 17" long open; 4 5/8" wide. We'll be happy to send you more pictures and to answer any questions.

Perfect for dolls, teddy bears and little kids; it is a reliable chair. 19 3/4"H at back X 15"W at front X 12"D. Have questions? Want more pictures? Email anytime; we'd be happy to oblige!

Miniature Bee Skep In Papier Mache & Oil Paint, Early 20thC

Was this a school project, a schoolboy artwork? Was it meant to house a miniature community of bees, or was it made for a museum or exhibit? We don't know. What we do know is that its got great form, great, small size, and it strikes a great silhouette when on display. It's made of papier mache and painted in what looks like an oil based earthy dark sage paint. It dates to the early 20th century, is from way up north and is very sweet. Its condition is very sweet, too, with only normal, anticipated wear to the paint. It stands 8" tall and rests on an 8" square plank of good, thick wood with chamfered edges. You will love this folky piece! More pictures available, upon request.

Wood Document Box In Mustard & Red Paint, c1850

An appealing box with crusty old & original dull red and mustard paint. On little feet; with a sweet apron molding around the bottom. What makes this box special is the writing inside. Signed in two different places in ink, it is dated 1841 or 1871. The dated inscription says To Octavia 1841 (or 71) and then two names which I can't read. The other inscription says Souvenir Present and gives a list of names, which I can't decipher. There is also a bit of writing in pencil. All this is on the lid interior. The box is in very fine, strong condition; the paint is dry and flaked. The entire piece...charming! 12 5/8"L X 4 7/8"H X 6 3/4"D.

This pair of a little boy’s front lacing boots has the best side silhouette we've seen in a long time. The boots have brass toe caps, stacked leather heels and leather soles marked "B Calf" and "5" on the heel for size. Square nails were used and wooden pegs holding the soles in place. No shoe ties. Excellent craftsmanship, very nice condition with just minimal rubbings to spots on the leather exterior. Ex-Museum exhibition (Mid-West US). 5 & 1/4"T, 5&3/8" heel to toe; 2 & 1/4" wide. New England Shaker Hussif, 19thC

This is an outstanding example of that essential 19th century housekeeping aid, the hussif, housewife or roll-up. By all appearances and from research, this is a New England Shaker community piece. Entirely hand sewn with Shaker precision and meticulous care, the interior is a quality, beautiful silk, most likely made right in that community. It is a changeable silk with good shimmer. There are two pockets for sewing tools, one in the silk and a separate pocket in which I found some early, unwaxed thread, a lovely little natural mother-of-pearl button, thin and delicate, and a charming snippet of Shaker silk that is in the pale pink that is virtually a Shaker "signature". Silk floss is wound around this silk piece. Three needle sheets are sewn to the interior, each framed by silk trim. Our favorite feature, however, is the original strawberry emery, heavy with its powder, and this strawberry fits into its very own compartment, as you can see in our picture. Closed, the hussif measures 2 1/2" X 4"W; opened, it measures 10"L and 4″W. In marvelous condition. Other views are available upon request.
