I do not operate an open shop but prefer instead to treat my interest in Americana in a more relaxed manner. Indeed, my primary preoccupation is teaching at the California Institute of Technology, which affords me the luxury of pursuing a tertiary interest in American political history. This, in turn, feeds my interest in Americana and gives me the flexibility to pursue offering a selection of American country and formal antiques that represent the best of what we might otherwise associate with Back East tastes and design.

unusual early 19th C walnut valet
Not sure how to begin describing this piece since I've never seen anything like it from the period. She walnut with mortise and tenon construction, a bowfront bottom shelf and Shaker-type pegs across the top rail. But what confuses me is that the second horizontal rail from the top has small holes across its bottom edge, and thus leaves me mystified as to its full purpose. But there she is, so judge for yourself. As for dimensions, she's 38 1/4" high, 32" wide, 10 1/2" deep at its feet. $465

early 19th or late 18th C wagon seat
Not sure if the seat is original, but if not, its still 19th C. The wagon seat itself, with early pegged construction, is itself early 19th C and quite possibly earlier than that. Seat height is 14", and she's 34" wide, 28" high in back. $475

Magnificent ca 1900 cast iron clown shooting gallery target, the best!
This piece is clearly for the collector of the best when it comes to cast iron shooting gallery targets. A superb clown that stands 20" tall (9 1/2" wide), she retains its original painted surface ... actually it appears, as is normal, to have been repainted several times, but even its most recent coat is pockmarked with having been the target of innumerable hits. There are no repairs of restorations. A true piece of American carnival folk art. $2,250.00

2 gallon stoneware jug w. magnificent floral cobalt decoration
Although unmarked except for the numeral "2", this 14 1/4" high two gallon jug most likely originates from NY or Vermont, and aside from a small chip on its lip, there are no issues ... and its cobalt decoration speaks for itself. $475.00

Salmon Jacquard coverlet att. to Phillip Allabach, Michigan ca 1876, w. eagles
Measuring 77" x 64", this Jacquard coverlet can safely be attributed to Phillip Allabach of Michigan. And since it is a single panel, it most likely is centennial (1876). Amazingly, she's in almost mint condition ... there are NO moth holes, rips, tears, etc. The sole apology is the small worn area along one edge as seen in my picture that doubtlessly corresponds to where the coverlet hung at the edge of the bed. $495.00

6 draw apothecary chest, original paint, dovetailed case
This six drawer apothecary chest measures 42 1/4" long, 13 1/2" deep and 28 1/4" high. The case and drawers are dovetailed, and its form, with a bottom shelf, is admittedly somewhat unusual. But a superb piece on which to display yet another piece of Americana such as a full bodied weathervane. $1,450.00

Nicholas Richardson's "Miners Panning for Gold" ca 1930 -- American Folk Art
This is the second of two wood carving dioramas executed by Nicholas Richardson I am offering for sale, and like the other (The Hodown), this too is a masterpiece of Depression Era folk art. Measuring 21 1/2" x 15 1/4", she's 100% original without restorations, repairs, etc. $3,200.00

Depression Era Folk Art Masterpiece, The Howdown
Nicholas Richardson was born in 1875 in Billings Montana and moved to Los Angeles in 1912. Nicholas apparently was a schizophrenic who would, from time to time, disappear for days or weeks at a time and reemerge with a new wood carving. This is one of the surviving examples of his work (he died in LA in the 1960s) as handed down by his son. And as an example of American Depression-era folk art, it is nothing short of a masterpiece. Indeed, one can label it 'museum quality'. In lieu of the stiffly carved figures that characterize the work of most wood carvers, Nicholas gave us a circle of wonderfully carved and painted dancers who actually seem to flow and move to the music. Overall, this piece measures 28 1/4" x 16", where each figure is approximately 6 3/4" high and the sole apology is some minor repairs to the feet of 3 of the dancers. $3,850.00

Miniature 19th C wall-hanging apothecary cupboard
Whether this was originally intended to be designated as a "miniature" I cannot say, but with 16 dovetailed drawers flanking two doors with frosted glass panels, housed in a fully dovetailed 16" x 14" case (5" deep), I'm not sure what else to call it. Made of mahogany, with mahogany secondary wood, she's most likely English. All but three knobs are ivory and the sole apologies are a few minor veneer patches to the door frames. $995

ca 1830 Theorem on Velvet
When it comes to condition ... the absence of staining and brilliance of color ... theorems rarely meet the standard set by this theorem. And impressive in size as well, measuring 24" x 19". And the theme, of course, speaks for itself. $2,250

Magnificent 19" diameter burl wood bowl
With a diameter of 19" and a height of 7 1/4", this is one of the most impressive burl bowls we've ever seen. And not only are there no apologies, but the exterior of the bowl retains traces of its original green paint. $3,450

Rare pair of 18th C Lancaster county frakturs
Its uncommon to find a Pennsylvania fraktur from the 18th century; its also uncommon to find a fraktur thats wholly hand drawn and colored. So imagine the rarity of a PAIR of hand drawn, hand colored frakturs from the same family, drawn clearly by the same hand, and dated 1791 and 1780! But that's what we have here. Each fraktur (excluding their frames) measures appx 9 1/4" x 7 1/4". There is, as my pictures show, a bit of roughness about the edges, but nothing unusual for this age and class of Americana. Additional pictures can be presented upon request. For the pair .... $4,250

Artistic carving ca 1900 Bellamy-type eagle
Measuring approximately 25": in length, this Bellamy-type eagle retains essentially all of its original polychrome paint and thus possesses a wonderful warm mellowed patina. Beautifully carved, I'm labeled it an "artistic carving" since its size belies the possibility it was intended for the stern of a ship. $2,500

19th C zink gold gilt eagle
With its 31" wingspan, this is indeed an impressive piece with a striking quality to its gold gilt. There is no evidence, moreover, of it ever having been repainted or gilded, yet the patina on the back and the general form of the eagle speaks to a mid 19th century origin.. $1,795.00

Wonderfully paint decorated document box
Measuring 17 3/4" wide, 11 5/8" deep, 8 3/4" high, the paint on this box is absolutely wonderful, what a varied crackalure and dried surface that denotes this box as ca 1830. Cut nail construction throughout, there are no repairs. $1,650
